29.01.13 OUR HOUSE: Charlotte, Nicky & Lorelai and their light & bright colourful renovation.

Charlotte, an acupuncturist, her husband Nicky and baby Lorelai  have lived in this 1960′s renovated bungalow for 6 years.  After extensively renovating the whole house, extended the ground floor and re-designed the upstairs they are looking forward to kicking back and enjoying the fruits of their labour and they certainly deserve it. A passion for the bold and the bright and a love of bathroom design has transformed this home into an oasis. A light breeze floats through the house the day we shot these images and the bi fold doors to the outside space capture perfectly the essence of the house. It’s fresh, it’s bright and it’s full of love.

Our house is modern, with a homely, practical feel. Originally it was built in the 1960′s as a bungalow, and a dorma added in the 80′s.  Now we have totally renovated it, we love how it feels fresh and bright, even when it’s cold and grey outside!

Our favourite room has to be the kitchen as we are in here all the time. We wanted it to be sunny and bright and we like having people over so it was important that it was a social space too.

03.12.12 It won’t last forever

So while some of you are enjoying the run up to Christmas and the cold crisp weather others are mourning the loss of their homes in floods and freak weather that we have been having around Great Britain and the World. I do feel glum when the sun doesn’t shine so this is for all of you who feel the same. Isn’t it just beautiful?!

“Cold short dark days, it helps to have a reminder that they won’t last forever…….”

Photograph by Louise Freeland. Check out her new blog here.

This photo also reminds me that youth doesn’t last forever. These children grow up so fast. Do one thing today and take a snapshot/photo/instagram of someone you love.  In 5 years time you’ll thank me for the memory…maybe!

23.11.12 because they’re worth it: Kids hair guide for long hair

Long hair can be fun and beautiful if kept in good condition. It can also be kind of boring when they wear the same old ponytail everyday. Here’s a few ideas to zhush up your hair repertoire!

option one: Straight – curl  or curl to straight.

If they’ve got straight hair, they’ll like curls for a change and if they have curly hair no doubt at some point they’ll love you to straighten it. As long as it’s not done too often it’s a fun change that doesn’t require much skill. Think about adding a heat spray to protect their hair first if using heated curlers or straighteners.

Option three: the fish plait

03.11.12 Because they’re worth it: Styling Curly hair for kids

It’s no secret that most people with curly hair often wish they had straight hair because it would be so much easier sometimes! I say, embrace the crazy curliness and give your child a head to be proud of.

You can do just as many styles with a bit of extra patience and and a bit of practise. Thanks to our stunning model Isabelle, who could not have been more patient. xx

29.10.12 My Room: Nancy, 9 & Hattie, 6

Last week we showed you this beautiful modernised Victorian house. Now we’re showing you the kids colourful rooms!

When you are growing towards those tween/ teen years it’s lovely to be able to have your own room to express your personality and display your own favourite toys and style. The only thing that can beat it is having your sister right next door! Being next door to a sister you love to play with is the best of both worlds. They never feel alone but they have their own space. Both Nancy and Hattie’s rooms are a wonderful expression of their own passions.

When Gill bought the bedroom furniture in the girls rooms it was built to fit into their old house but they have managed to adapt it for this house.

“I like children’s furniture to have a childlike feel but not too twee. I like solid and well made.”

For this creative family it is wonderful to see how the children have had a creative mark on their rooms.

22.10.12 Our house: Gill, Ian, Nancy & Hattie – A modern Victorian Delight

This late Victorian beauty is home to a very talented and creative Gill, her husband Ian and their two lovely daughters Nancy, 9 and Hattie, 6.

When you walk into this family home it’s like getting a feeling of warmth wash over you. It feels loved. There is something endearing about a space that’s lived in as much as it’s loved. Not every magazine and book is on a shelf and not every decorative item is in a minimalist storage cupboard. It’s refreshing. It’s the kind of house you feel happy to walk in, kick your shoes off and curl up on the sofa. The Parquet flooring and original features mixed with classic contemporary furniture welcomes you in and gives you the desire to see more.  Having not realised we knew each other, Gill, who once managed a store of Habitat in the 1990′s, recognised me as one of her Saturday girls almost immediately. Small world! It was a delight to see what I remembered as her passion and love of interiors, displayed in every inch of her home, over a decade after we worked together.

19.10.12 Because they’re worth it! : Hair styles for your kids

Image: Hair by Siobhan McNamara Montague. Photography by Tracey Chalk. Thanks to Amelie, Isabelle & Kitty

Bored of the same old, same old? Well so probably are they. If you live creating the same 3 hairstyles for school or the weekend, add a little accessory or a twist here and a few grips there and suddenly you have a whole new look for your little offspring. After all they get to play ‘Girls World’ so it’s only fair we play on them! I always fancied myself as a hairdresser…

For the next three Fridays  we’ll show you a few ideas for what to do with their barnet and some gorgeous accessories to finish the look whether it’s short, curly or long and add in some tutorials for all those tricky ones like the fish plait. (Always wanted to learn that one!) Plus we’ll add one final week on for all your children’s hair questions you always wanted to ask to our lovely Stylist Siobhan, so send your questions this way!

Have a wonderful weekend peeps!

13.09.12 Take a Bow: Once upon a time we made homemade jewellery in minutes

04.09.12 Some girls like pink: Barbie or Sindy?

Some girls like pink. Me? Well I like it in small doses but I’m not sure I could cope with a whole room of pink in the house but some girls LOVE it. This is a little series on the pink stuff.

When i was little we had a Sindy bed and wardrobe, a horse and some other bits. We loved Sindy because well she was like Barbie but a bit more …shall we say ‘real’. These days i look at some of the current Barbie paraphernalia out there and it just doesn’t seem as well made as the old stuff. Their legs aren’t always made of that soft rubbery material and some of the furniture looks more monstrosity than sweet. That’s just me though. In my house we have a small collection of vintage Barbies’ and their clothes! Plus a horse and a few newer additions but that’s about it. If your kids LOVE all that stuff but you don’t want a large plastic kingdom with a zillion breakable doors what do you buy? Well a vintage Sindy house of course!
